Big Ten Rivalry: Gophers Test Resilience Against Indiana's Dual Threat
Minnesota’s 5-2 season faces its steepest challenge yet against a 1,336-yard rushing attack and a quarterback who has thrown 18 touchdowns.

The University of Minnesota enters Week 9 with a 5-2 record and a schedule that head coach P.J. Fleck described as the hardest in the country for the next six weeks. The Gophers travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to face the defending national champion Indiana University Hoosiers on Thursday, a contest that will be featured on ESPN’s College Game Day.
Indiana’s offense presents a specific tactical problem for the Gophers defense. Running backs Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe Jr. have combined for 1,336 rushing yards this season. Both players average more than five yards per carry. Defensive coordinator Danny Collins noted that the pair plays with exceptional acceleration and patience, forcing the defense to maintain gap integrity against a scheme that operates differently from previous opponents.
The Gophers must also contain Tobi Osunsanmi, who leads the Big Ten with nine sacks. Osunsanmi recorded two sacks in Indiana’s 13-6 victory over Michigan. If the Minnesota offensive line cannot generate time for the quarterback, the offense may struggle to sustain drives against a ranked defense.
On the offensive side, kicker Luke Drzewiecki remains perfect on all field goal and extra point attempts. The transfer from New Mexico kicked a 46-yard game-winner against Iowa and earned Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honors. His accuracy will be essential if the Gophers find themselves in field goal range against a high-pressure defensive line.
Indiana’s passing attack is equally dangerous. Quarterback Josh Hoover, a transfer who replaced Fernando Mendoza, has thrown for 1,741 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just one interception. Wide receiver Charlie Becker, projected as a potential eighth overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft by Sports Illustrated, has already accumulated 726 receiving yards. The Gophers secondary must prioritize covering Becker to limit the damage in the air.
Minnesota’s defensive line has shown signs of improvement. Linebacker Joey Gerlach, now in his fifth season, has one sack, three forced fumbles, and one interception. Defensive lineman TJ Bush Jr. has four sacks and recorded his first collegiate interception against Iowa. Bush Jr. said Wednesday that both teams share a 1-0 mindset, treating each week as a fresh start. He described Indiana as a technical team that does not make many self-inflicted errors.
This matchup is the third consecutive season the Gophers have faced the defending national champion. They lost to Michigan in 2024 and Ohio State in 2025. Minnesota last defeated Indiana in 2021, winning 35-14.
The Gophers’ remaining schedule includes three teams currently in the AP poll: UCLA, Northwestern, and Wisconsin. Their only Big Ten loss this season came against Purdue. Fleck stated that the team has handled its challenges so far, noting that they went 1-0 against Iowa and now face five more ranked opponents, starting with Indiana.
Fleck emphasized that the team is continuing to challenge itself to improve. He acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming slate but expressed confidence in the team's ability to execute against elite defenses. The game is scheduled for Thursday, with pre-game coverage beginning on College Game Day.
Minnesota’s offensive line will be tasked with holding off Osunsanmi, while the defensive line aims to disrupt Richard and Beebe Jr. The outcome of this game will set the tone for the Gophers' final push of the regular season.
