The College Football Playoff selection committee released its first official rankings Tuesday, placing undefeated Miami at No. 1. The Hoosiers of Indiana, the defending champions, secured the No. 4 spot.
The top of the board featured three teams with perfect records. Miami held the top position, followed by Georgia at No. 2 and Utah at No. 3. Indiana finished fourth, ranking eight spots above Ohio State.
Ohio State dropped to No. 12 after losing quarterback Julian Sayin. The Buckeyes beat Indiana last month, yet the committee placed them well below the Hoosiers. Alabama sat at No. 5, eight spots ahead of Tennessee at No. 13. Tennessee suffered a 16-point loss to Alabama just weeks earlier.
Kentucky ranked No. 6 and Texas No. 7. UCLA, the only other undefeated team, took the No. 8 position. Notre Dame fell to No. 11, a drop of seven spots from their standing in the Associated Press Top 25. The Irish play Miami on Saturday, a game that determines if they remain in the final 12 teams.
The committee consists of 13 members. Boise State, ranked No. 25, holds the automatic bid for the Group of Six. This placement leaves Ohio State outside the field of 12 if the playoffs started today.
