Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday that Democrats achieved a generational change in the Senate map after winning control of both chambers.

The New York Democrat spoke outside the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, stating that voters granted the majority with the specific purpose of fulfilling the American people's wishes, not to act arbitrarily.

Democrats captured seats in several states previously carried by President Trump, including Iowa, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas. The party also won a historic race in Kansas, the first time the state has sent a Democrat to the Senate in 94 years.

Schumer attributed these results to candidates who tailored their messages to local voters. The party now holds a 54-seat majority, counting two independent senators who caucus with Democrats. Races in Alaska and Mississippi remain uncalled.

The incoming Majority Leader said the party plans to lower the cost of living, end the Iran war, and investigate the White House regarding corruption allegations. He noted that while some voters remain skeptical, the days of a compliant Senate are finished.

President Trump has indicated he will veto some Democratic priorities but may negotiate with the new Congress. Schumer said the party will work to reduce costs with or without the president's cooperation.
