ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field to win Game 5 and take the franchise's first World Series title. The Brewers, from the smallest market in the majors, finished the series in front of thousands of their own fans who had traveled to the section behind Milwaukee's dugout for the last three games.
Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski started and went 5 2/3 innings without allowing a run on two hits. He left the mound after suffering a right calf cramp and received a standing ovation from the crowd. Rookie Cooper Pratt contributed two hits and two RBIs. The 22-year-old Pratt recorded six consecutive hits, a Series record for a rookie, before hitting a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Jackson Chourio collected 11 hits across the five games, another Series record.
The championship arrives in the club's 58th season. The franchise started as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and relocated to Milwaukee the following year. The team's only earlier trip to the World Series came in 1982, when Milwaukee held a 3-1 lead in Game 7 but lost 6-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Milwaukee fans gathered at Tropicana Field on Wednesday night to watch the final out.
