The Indianapolis Colts are seeking a new general manager to replace Chris Ballard, and analysts are already outlining specific priorities for the incoming executive. Zach Hicks, a contributor for Locked On Colts, stated that the next hire must prioritize data-driven decision-making to steer the franchise in a modern direction. Hicks emphasized that the organization needs a leader who can effectively manage the salary cap and compensatory pick formulas, areas where he believes the previous regime fell short.

Hicks identified several successful front offices as models for the new GM. He cited Baltimore, Cleveland, Philadelphia, and San Francisco as teams that utilize analytics extensively. "Those front offices are really big on analytics, and I want to see a GM that’s on the forefront of that movement going forward," Hicks said during a Zoom appearance on The Fan Morning Show. He also suggested that the ideal candidate should possess a varied resume, such as experience as a head coach, salary cap officer, or player personnel director, rather than relying solely on scouting experience.

A key immediate task for the new executive is securing a contract extension for defensive lineman Adetomiwa Adebawore. The player is currently in the final year of his rookie deal. Hicks described Adebawore as the best player on the Colts defense during the first half of the season. He noted that Adebawore has surpassed the performance level of DeForest Buckner in many respects this year, even though Buckner was recently traded back to San Francisco.

The financial resources to retain Adebawore are substantial. The Colts are projected to have well over $100 million in cap room available for the upcoming offseason. Hicks argued that this surplus makes a new deal a straightforward negotiation. "I do think it would be a mistake to let this guy walk," Hicks said. He added that the re-signing would be easy even if the final price tag appears high to external observers.

Adebawore has produced notable stats recently, including two sacks, a big run stop, and a fourth-quarter holding penalty drawn in the team's 16-10 loss at Minnesota. Hicks also proposed a structural change in how the owner, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, operates. He supports the idea of a leadership council that provides multiple perspectives before major decisions are made, while still allowing the GM to retain final authority.

The Colts' front office overhaul comes as the team continues to rebuild its roster. Hicks believes that combining an analytics-heavy approach with the retention of high-performing young talent will set the foundation for future success. The search for Ballard's replacement is ongoing, with the team aiming to hire someone who can balance statistical analysis with hands-on personnel management.
