Bill Polian, the former Indianapolis Colts general manager, identified a specific Saturday practice moment as his favorite memory from the 2006 Super Bowl XLI victory. Polian spoke about the event as the NFL approaches Super Bowl LXI, scheduled for February 14, 2027.
Polian served as the Colts general manager from 1998 to 2009. During that 11-year tenure, the team recorded a 131-61 win-loss record. The Colts won eight division titles while Polian was in charge. He later served as team president from 2009 to 2011.
The memory Polian shared centers on a decision made during the 2006 season. He explained that during his time in Buffalo, he and coach Dick Levy allowed family members to attend the Saturday walk-through practice. When the Colts were preparing for their first Super Bowl in Indianapolis, Polian and head coach Tony Dungy had handled most preparation details. They had not yet decided whether to invite families.
Polian asked Dungy for his opinion. Dungy replied that he did not know. Polian then consulted quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning said he was not a fan of the idea. Polian asked Manning to consider how he would feel if his child were there. Both Dungy and Manning agreed the idea had merit. The team allowed families to attend the Saturday practice.
The event resulted in organic group photos. Each unit, including the defensive line, linebackers, and cornerbacks, posed with their position coaches. Families posed with the players. Polian said the scene brought tears to his eyes.
Super Bowl LXI will air on WRTV in February 2027. Polian remains in Indianapolis to reflect on the 2006 championship season.
