Two national guests told The Morning Hustle listeners this week that local elections carry more weight than most voters realize.

Daria C. Dawson, executive director of America Votes, said officials closest to home hold the most direct power. She noted that school board members control curriculum and phone policies, while secretaries of state oversee election administration. Dawson said these races receive the least media coverage despite their impact.

Jordan, a media personality from Texas, highlighted local judicial races. She raised concerns about biased judges and voter silencing in her home state. Dawson connected federal food safety inspectors to recent recalls of beef, butter, and lettuce. The pair also discussed how public health decisions became politicized during the pandemic.

Jordan said, "When people say 'I don’t do politics,' I’m like, 'Well, politics will do you.'" Dawson addressed voter suppression directly. She asked, "If your vote did not actually have value, why are they trying to suppress it?"

Both guests advised listeners to vote early and plan ahead. They recommended writing voting choices on paper because phones are often restricted at polling sites. The guests suggested using nonpartisan guides like Vote 411 to understand confusing ballot measures. Voters facing intimidation can call 1-866-OUR-VOTE for help.

The advice comes as Central Indiana residents prepare for the 2026 midterm elections.
