Van Lathan Jr. told listeners on Nov. 3 that he views casting a ballot as an act of leverage rather than a defensive measure. Speaking on The Morning Hustle, the producer and media figure pushed back against the idea of voting as simple harm reduction. "Think about a vote that is a weapon," Lathan said. He described the ballot as a negotiation tool and "an order at a restaurant" for the world a person wants.
Lathan, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, recounted his rise at TMZ, moving from tour guide to field camera work, writing and eventually senior producer. He also revisited a televised exchange with Kanye West, stating that the moment connected him with people because he stood up for them. He characterized the MAGA movement as "distinctly anti-black," citing pressure on Black women in workplaces, Black children in schools and environmental conditions in Cancer Alley, an industrial corridor in South Louisiana.
Addressing Stephen A. Smith, Lathan said their public disagreement does not stem from personal friction. He stated that he operates from a "people first" perspective. He described Smith as holding a "top-down view" concerned with being palatable in certain rooms, adding, "I do not feel that way."
The conversation also touched on Ava DuVernay's documentary 14th, which examines the refounding of America after the Civil War, birthright citizenship and the "lost cause" ideology associated with the Confederate flag. Lathan concluded by discussing ICE raids in Chicago and threats of denaturalization. "No one is safe from fascistic tyranny," Lathan said. He ended the interview with the statement: "We have to train for freedom."
