Indianapolis crews will clear a homeless encampment from under the Monon Trail bridge on Tuesday morning.
The site is located in the woods where the Fall Creek trail intersects with the bridge. Three large tents were set up in the area. Nearby items included a bathtub, a couch, and a child’s stroller. These objects were situated feet away from the path where people bike and jog.
Andrew Merkley, director of the Indianapolis Office of Public Health and Safety, said the city aims to keep local trails clean. He noted that cleanup is a priority for abandoned camps, particularly those along waterways. Merkley stated that the area contained debris, including potential human waste, that could affect the environment or the health of nearby residents.
The city will pay for the work using FEMA funds. Officials said the area was impacted by recent flooding, which qualifies it for this financial assistance. City representatives said no one is currently living at the site. The people who had been staying there were connected to homeless resources.
Local resident Dylan Zyrowski frequently bikes through the area. He said he generally feels safe there, but his mother did not feel secure while walking her grandchildren nearby. He welcomed the decision to clean the site.
Zyrowski also expressed empathy for the individuals who lived in the encampment. He described the scene as heartbreaking. He said he believes everyone is only a few life decisions away from being on the streets. He added that showing love and care to those individuals is important.
