Chris Brown will not serve time in a British prison for a 2023 nightclub attack.
A London judge handed the 37-year-old singer an eight-month suspended sentence on Monday.
The sentence was suspended for a period of 12 months.
Brown must commit no further crimes in the United Kingdom during that window to avoid jail.
The ruling follows his guilty plea to affray.
Affray is a charge that covers the use or threat of unlawful violence.
Prosecutors dropped more serious charges earlier this year.
Those dropped charges included attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.
They also included assault causing actual bodily harm.
The incident occurred at a private members club called Tape.
The venue is located in the Mayfair neighborhood of London.
Video footage showed Brown attacking producer Abraham Diaw on the dance floor in 2023. Brown hit Diaw in the head twice with a bottle of tequila. Diaw suffered head and knee injuries and was treated at a hospital. Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray. Akinlolu, 40, received a four-month suspended sentence. The judge found that Akinlolu kicked Diaw while the producer lay defenseless on the floor. Both men were ordered to pay 1,500 pounds in court costs. That amount is roughly 2,003 U.S. dollars. Judge Tony Baumgartner told Brown that the violence was serious and public. “Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment,” the judge said. “The law applies equally to everyone.” Baumgartner cited several factors for the suspended sentence. These included Brown’s guilty plea, which allowed for a one-third reduction in his sentence. The judge also pointed to Brown’s stable employment and charity work. Brown’s clean criminal record in recent years was another factor. The judge noted the potential impact of incarceration on Brown’s four children. Brown was arrested at a Manchester hotel in 2025. He had returned to the U.K. for his Breezy Bowl XX tour. He was initially denied bail but posted a 5 million pound security fee. That sum equals about 6.68 million U.S. dollars. Diaw dropped a 16 million dollar civil lawsuit against Brown in 2025. Brown has a history of legal issues involving violence. He pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna in 2009. In 2013, he admitted to punching a man who tried to take a photo with him. Brown arrived at court wearing a leather jacket, glasses, and a black mask. He thanked the judge and acknowledged a group of supporters outside. He was later seen leaving the courthouse. The suspended sentence means Brown remains free while serving the suspension period. He must report to a local police station if required. Any new conviction during the 12-month window could trigger the prison term. The judge warned that the leniency was not a reward. It was a chance for Brown to make amends. Brown’s team issued a statement saying he was grateful for the decision. They said he would continue to focus on his music and family. The case closed with Brown walking out of the court building. He did not speak to reporters waiting on the street. His car pulled away from the curb shortly after 10 a.m.
