Colts' 42-7 Loss Raises Questions on Daniel Jones' Support
ESPN reporter Stephen Holder argues the team's offensive line and receiving corps have collapsed, leaving the quarterback without the help he had last year.

Indianapolis Colts fans faced a 42-7 defeat in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday. The loss intensified scrutiny on quarterback Daniel Jones. ESPN Colts reporter Stephen Holder joined The Ride with JMV on 107.5 The Fan to discuss the team's struggles. Host JMV said he could no longer watch the games.
Holder noted that Jones performed well when the offense had its best players healthy. Last season, Alec Pierce ran downfield, while Josh Downs and Tyler Warren contributed to the attack. Michael Pittman also operated effectively. Those elements are missing now. Holder stated that Jones only succeeds in optimum situations. The current roster does not provide those conditions.
The reporter did not blame the quarterback entirely. He said he is not absolving Jones, who is playing poorly. However, Holder argued the organization set the quarterback up for failure. The team has asked Jones to carry too much of the offensive load without adequate support. This structural issue predates the recent losses.
The situation dates back to the offseason moves by management. The Colts traded several key veterans. Holder believes decisions about the team's direction have already been made. He expects running back Jonathan Taylor to be traded as well. These moves have changed the dynamics of the locker room and the field.
JMV questioned why head coach Shane Steichen remains in the job. The host called the Jacksonville loss more embarrassing than the previous defeat by Tennessee that led to Chris Ballard's firing. Holder responded that firing Steichen now would satisfy fans for about 24 hours. It would not fix the underlying issues. The team does not have an obvious interim coach candidate. Holder expects the organization to finish the season and make final decisions in January.
The discussion also covered wide receiver Josh Downs. Downs publicly requested a trade. Holder said he never criticizes players for seeking better pay. However, he believes the receiver hurt his own value. Outside teams see a player who is not currently producing. The Colts might have been willing to pay him this offseason. Holder stated that Downs' value is not what he thinks it is.
