Purdue coach Matt Painter used a recent exhibition loss to UConn as a hard lesson for his young roster. Painter spoke on The Ride with JMV before the Boilermakers faced Gonzaga. He said the game showed the team exactly where it struggles when tested by a top-tier opponent.
Purdue has not won a preseason game against UConn in four years, according to Painter. Despite the losing streak, he believes these matchups are necessary. Painter noted that being physically dominated helps remove any comfort from the squad. He described the experience as making players a little bit callous. It also forces the team to identify real problems before the regular season starts.
The exhibition revealed specific statistical deficiencies. Purdue shot 2-for-25 from three-point range during the loss. Painter pointed to bad shot selection near the end of the shot clock. The team also lost the battle on the boards. They turned over the ball more often than UConn. Painter said the gap between the starters and the bench became obvious against a high-level defense. He admitted the team is not ready for that level yet, but said the goal is to become ready for the next challenge.
Painter emphasized the need for competitive fear among his players. He told the group that without that fear, they are preparing to lose. He wants players who are unafraid of any opponent but aware that mistakes will be punished. He said if a player is not right, the other team will exploit it. This mindset is central to his approach for the upcoming schedule.
The coach also discussed his recruiting philosophy. He favors production over raw talent. Painter said coaches often chase players who have high potential but lack consistent output. He prefers to analyze 35 games of data. He looks for players who rebound, protect the ball, and make free throws. He noted that human eyes have a bias, so data helps remove that subjectivity.
Purdue played its season opener on Monday night. No. 15 Gonzaga defeated the Boilermakers 78-72 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Daniel Jacobsen led Purdue with 22 points. The free throw line was a major differentiator. Gonzaga made 26 of 34 attempts. Purdue made 15 of 21. Purdue Athletics provided the game statistics.
Purdue will return home on Friday. The team will play Valparaiso at Mackey Arena. This contest marks the first home game of the season for the Boilermakers.
