New York, NY. LL Cool J told a podcast audience on Oct. 16 that the music industry is too focused on social media engagement. He appeared on Carmelo Anthony’s 7PM in Brooklyn show to discuss this shift. The rapper believes that streaming numbers and view counts are distracting artists from making good music.

The artist argued that record labels and musicians often prioritize short-form content over deep musical connection. He said musicians feel pressure to write songs that work well in short social media clips. This approach creates catchy captions but may fail to build a lasting relationship between the artist and the listener.

LL Cool J compared the current music environment to professional basketball. He noted that statistics do not always tell the full story of a player’s contribution to a team. In the same way, he believes an artist’s success should not be measured only by streams, views, or social media engagement. A song can attract millions of views without establishing real value.

The rapper encouraged new artists to be patient when their music does not receive immediate attention. He advised them to stop constantly chasing the next trend. Instead, he wants artists to keep creating and focus on developing a dedicated audience. He summarized this advice with a simple command: “Make another good song.”

This message reflects LL Cool J’s own recent experiences in the studio. He returned to music after an extended break to work on his 2024 album, The FORCE. He admitted that his early songwriting efforts for the project did not meet his expectations. Rather than settling for material he did not believe in, he challenged himself to improve his craft.

The rapper brought in Hip Hop veteran Q-Tip to help guide the album. In a 2024 interview with the Associated Press, LL described the process as essentially learning how to rap again. He had been in the industry for decades but felt the need to start over. He explained his mindset during that period: “I wasn’t trying to do trendy, and I wasn’t trying to recapture anything I did before.”

LL Cool J eventually gave Q-Tip production duties across the entire album. This decision showed his willingness to approach his craft differently. He chose not to rely on his established reputation for the new record. The experience reinforced the advice he gave to younger rappers about self-improvement.

The veteran artist wants rappers to remember that viral attention can fade. He believes that creating music people genuinely enjoy and return to may take time. That type of connection is worth pursuing over temporary metrics. The 2024 album served as a practical example of this philosophy in action.
