Police confirmed the death of 13-year-old Andrea Eguia after officers found her shot inside an apartment at the Georgetown Apartments on Bunker Hill Drive on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The incident occurred on Saturday morning, October 24, 2026. Eguia was transported to a hospital where she later died.

As of Tuesday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has not announced any arrests. Officials have not yet released details on what led to the shooting. The family is currently waiting for information regarding who took Eguia's life and the specific circumstances surrounding the event.

Eguia was an eighth grade student at Belzer Middle School. She was one of four siblings. Her aunt, Marina Bontempo, described the girl as the center of her family's life. "She was somebody that kept us together," Bontempo said. "When her mom had bad days, she was her happiness; when her dad had bad days, she was his happiness; she always lifted up everyone around her."

The family says Eguia left their home without her mother's knowledge on the morning of the shooting. Bontempo said Eguia intended to meet a boy she liked and return home in time. "She wasn’t out for vengeance, she wasn’t out for gangs, none of that," Bontempo said. "Andrea went and thought she was going to kick it with a boy that liked her and that she liked and whatever teenage girls do at this time, and then they were going to make it home in time and…Andrea never made it home."

Neighbors and family members remember Eguia by her nickname, "Pooders." She enjoyed making TikTok videos, styling her hair, and experimenting with makeup and lashes. She had a strong interest in fashion and personal style. Bontempo noted that Eguia was not judgmental. "She wasn’t judgmental, she wasn’t evil, she was a good girl," Bontempo said.

The family is preparing for a funeral service in Fort Wayne scheduled for Friday. They are asking community members to share stories about the light Eguia brought to their lives. "We want to hear your stories, We want to see and know, how and what light Andrea brought to your life," Bontempo said. The family also asked the public not to judge the 13-year-old or her parents. "You pulled our souls out of our chest. A whole family. She has aunts that loved her, uncles, grandmas, cousins, She was somebody important and you took that from us," Bontempo said.
