Muncie police detectives and the Detroit Violent Gang Task Force arrested Dairus E. Thompson III on Thursday in Michigan. The 17-year-old faces charges related to the death of Christopher Wilson Jr., a 17-year-old Yorktown High School senior who was found shot to death in a vehicle on Oct. 5. The Muncie Police Department confirmed the arrest in a news release but did not specify where Thompson III is being held.
Court records show detectives filed a probable cause affidavit on Tuesday. The documents charge Thompson III with aiding, inducing or causing murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and obstruction of justice. The obstruction charge stems from the alteration, damage, or removal of a document. No hearing date has been scheduled in the records yet.
This arrest marks the second detention in the investigation. Dairus Thompson II, a 40-year-old resident of Farmland in Randolph County, is also charged with aiding, inducing or causing murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and obstruction of justice. A hearing for Thompson II is set for Monday in Delaware Circuit Court 1. He is currently held in Delaware County jail on an unrelated matter. Police have not clarified if the two Thompsons are related.
Wilson was discovered fatally shot multiple times inside a car around 3 a.m. on Oct. 5. The vehicle was located in the 1400 block of East Cromer Avenue. This area is part of the R&M Land Co. subdivision northeast of the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and East Centennial Avenue. Wilson had committed to play football at West Virginia in June.
Police previously described the arrest of the elder Thompson as a milestone in the case. The Muncie Police Department continues to process the new charges against the younger suspect in Michigan.
