Indy Construction Firm Expands Staffing Arm to Serve Local Businesses
Sher Staffing will broaden its reach across the region, leveraging infrastructure built through national projects to support Central Indiana workforce development.

Sher Staffing is expanding its operations across Indianapolis and surrounding communities. The company, founded by Yessenia Johnson, aims to build stronger partnerships with local organizations focused on workforce development. This expansion follows a period of rapid growth that turned the firm into a multimillion-dollar enterprise.
Johnson and her husband, Shami, started Sher Contracting with a goal to create a people-first environment for women in construction. After more than ten years in the industry, Johnson saw the specific challenges women face in a male-dominated field. She designed the company to prioritize women in leadership and safety roles. The workplace includes appropriate facilities and clear paths for training and career advancement.
As the construction side of the business grew, staffing needs increased. Johnson created Sher Staffing to handle those workforce solutions separately. This split allows Sher Contracting to focus on construction support and project management. Sher Staffing now provides skilled labor for projects across the country.
The Johnsons connected with the Indianapolis business community through the Indy Chamber. They joined the Hispanic Business Council network and entered Enclave. Enclave is a program run by the council in partnership with Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. Through this program, Johnson met her business coach and staff from the Central Indiana Women’s Business Center.
Johnson called Enclave the most impactful part of her business journey. The program pushed her to think about leadership, strategy, and scalability. It also allowed her to learn from other entrepreneurs and established leaders in Central Indiana. She credits the lasting trust built with clients, employees, and communities for the companies' success.
The firms now have a national presence but remain focused on Indiana. The next phase of growth brings the infrastructure developed for national operations back to local projects. Sher Staffing will work to expand its reach throughout the region. The goal is to create opportunities for employees and partners in the local community.
The companies continue to operate with a dual focus on construction support and staffing. Johnson remains committed to strengthening relationships in the state. The expansion plans center on leveraging national expertise to serve local needs. This approach supports their long-term vision for community impact.
