Claude can now read your bank statements and explain your spending
Anthropic's new beta tool links the AI assistant to bank accounts via Plaid, letting US users ask about bills and balances in plain English.

Anthropic has released a new Personal Finance feature for its Claude AI chatbot. The tool allows users to connect their bank and card accounts to the assistant. This launch happens this week as a beta rollout. It targets subscribers in the United States who pay for Claude Pro, Max, or Ultra plans.
The system works by linking Claude to financial data through Plaid. Plaid is a platform that bridges banking services with third-party applications. Once connected, users can ask natural language questions about their money. For example, a person could ask where their funds went during a specific month. Claude then generates a detailed overview of that spending.
The breakdown includes essential costs like rent and utilities. It also covers discretionary spending such as shopping and food. Users can ask broader questions about their financial standing. They can request calculations for remaining bills before the next payday. The AI can also estimate if a user can afford large purchases, such as holiday trips. It can provide estimates for potential monthly savings.
Security is a central part of the design. The access granted to Claude is strictly read-only. The AI can view data but cannot change it. Claude does not need to see banking passwords because Plaid handles the connection. This setup prevents banks from managing unvetted AI bots directly on their systems. Anthropic states that Claude cannot move, manage, or invest a user's money. The feature is not designed to provide investment advice.
The AI gains specific visibility into account details. This includes the bank name, account names and types, and the last four digits of the account number. Claude can see current balances and credit limits. It also has access to up to two years of transaction history. With this data, the assistant can explain complex financial terms that might confuse users. It provides clear answers about balances and specific transactions. This acts as an explanatory layer over raw financial data.
This launch follows a similar move by OpenAI. OpenAI introduced a comparable feature for ChatGPT in May. That tool also uses Plaid to connect with user bank accounts. The two releases show a trend in the tech industry toward integrating AI with personal finance. Anthropic views this release as an initial phase in a larger strategy. The company suggests that for significant financial decisions, users should have Claude work alongside licensed professionals and regulated firms.
Anthropic is exploring how to facilitate this collaboration within the platform. The company has invited input from banks, wealth managers, and other financial services companies. This input will help shape future developments. The beta rollout allows the company to gather feedback and refine the experience. It serves as a testing ground before a potential wider release. The approach emphasizes partnership with existing financial institutions rather than replacing them.
By positioning the tool as a bridge between users and professional financial services, Anthropic aims to address hesitations about AI managing money. The reliance on Plaid ensures the connection remains secure and standardized. This factor likely influences user trust in adopting the new feature. Users can now receive immediate insights into their financial health. They do not have to manually sort through statements to find answers.
