Texas Republicans Lost Two Seats On New Maps
Midterm results show GOP redistricting strategies failed to hold ground in key states.

Texas Republicans lost two House seats on maps they redrew to protect their majority. The state had called a special session last year to redraw congressional lines. That process followed the floods in Kerr County. It also saw Democrats leave the state and Rep. Nicole Collier held in the state House. The Texas Tribune reports the party flipped only one of the five targeted seats. They lost two others they previously held. The new map was built around the gains President Donald Trump made with Latino voters in 2024. Those voters shifted back to the Democratic Party in this election. This move fueled a blue shift in the state.
The Texas redistricting effort also triggered a reaction in California. The state there redrew its congressional map to neutralize the gains in Texas. As a result, California picked up House seats previously held by Republicans. The outcome in Texas appears to be one of the most damaging self-inflicted blows of this cycle. The new map did not help Republicans hold their ground. It also gave Democrats a path to reclaim lost territory.
South Carolina saw a similar result. The state legislature adopted a new congressional map to remove Rep. Don Davis from his seat. Davis is currently ahead in the vote count. Democrat Chuck Hubbard is unseating Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx in the Fifth Congressional District. The effort to remove Davis has failed to achieve its goal. The state’s new map did not secure the seat for the GOP.
Tennessee offers a mixed result. State Rep. Justin Pearson lost his congressional bid after the legislature eliminated a majority-Black district. He lost by a single percentage point. The margin was narrow. This suggests the redistricting did not create a safe seat for the Republican candidate in that specific race.
Missouri voters rejected the state’s redistricting effort. The Supreme Court ordered the state to conduct midterms using the original map. It also ordered the state to honor a ballot initiative that put the map to a vote. Voters rejected the redistricting plan soundly. The Missouri state legislature had gone against the will of the people in previous actions. This result indicates voters had enough of the legislative process.
Florida shifted blue in House races despite Republican wins in other offices. Democrat Jared Moskowitz won his race in a district redrawn to favor Republicans. Kathy Castor and Pia Dandiya also won their races in similar districts. Byron Donalds was elected to the Governor’s office as a Republican. Angie Nixon, a Democrat, narrowly lost the Senate race. The House results in Florida contrast with the predictions of a low-competition midterm. Analysts had predicted this would be one of the least competitive midterms in modern history due to redistricting efforts.
The results across these states show that gerrymandering did not save the party from an unpopular president. Policy decisions that affect daily life for the average American played a role. The redistricting efforts in Texas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, and Florida did not produce the large margins expected. The maps changed the landscape of the race but did not change the final outcome in most cases.
