ChatGPT now processes search queries equal to one-fifth of the total volume handled by Google. OpenAI shared this metric during a press event on Monday, marking a major shift in how the company measures its product usage. The figure represents a direct comparison between the two platforms for the first time in an official corporate update.

Adam Fry, the consumer product lead for ChatGPT, provided the numbers and the methodology behind them. He defined a search strictly as any user input that forces the system to perform a web lookup. This definition excludes simple conversational exchanges, such as requests for definitions or step-by-step explanations. Fry did not state where the baseline data for Google's volume came from, leaving some uncertainty about the exact source of the comparison.

The 20 percent figure places ChatGPT far ahead of previous competitors in the space. In 2023, during antitrust litigation against Google, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified that Bing held only about 3 percent of the market share after more than ten years of operation. At that same trial, Google argued that ChatGPT posed a serious threat to its dominance. The new data suggests OpenAI now agrees with that assessment of its own growth potential.

The technical infrastructure supporting this traffic remains a subject of industry speculation. Analysts believe OpenAI relies heavily on Microsoft Bing for a large portion of its search results, supplemented by an internal index. Some reports suggest that certain queries may also be routed through Google's systems, creating a complex backend relationship between the two rivals.

OpenAI is also adjusting its business model to monetize this growth. The company plans to introduce more visual advertisements, including images of sponsored products and services. Fry stated that these ads have not caused lasting negative reactions from users. He noted that product usage and quality have not suffered due to the commercial content. This strategy supports the company's path toward an initial public offering expected in early next year.

The interface for these search results is changing as well. Fry described the new direction as the Intelligent UI, a concept that turns chatbot responses into interactive canvases rather than plain text. This approach includes visualizations and charts directly within the conversation. The company aims to make the experience more dynamic as it competes with Google's own AI Overview features and generative tools.
