The Seattle Mariners exercised their $9 million club option on right-hander Andres Munoz on Thursday, keeping the 27-year-old reliever under contract for another season.
The move prevents Munoz from entering free agency after a season in which he posted a 5-6 record and a 4.24 earned average. That earned average marked the highest of his career, while he recorded 28 saves in 38 opportunities and struck out 89 batters in 57 1/3 innings.
Munoz signed a four-year, $7.5 million deal in December 2021 that included three club options. He earned a spot in the All-Star Game in both 2024 and 2025. His salary for the current season was $7 million under the first option of that contract.
Seattle also declined to exercise a $9 million option on outfielder Victor Robles, who becomes a free agent. Robles will receive a $500,000 buyout, completing a two-year, $9.75 million contract. The 29-year-old batted .256 with no home runs, nine runs batted in, and 10 stolen bases in 65 games. He missed time from April 6 to May 22 due to a right pectoral strain.
The club also rejected a $6,075,000 option on right-hander Bryce Miller. Miller receives a $15,000 buyout, concluding a one-year agreement that guaranteed him $2,452,500. The 28-year-old remains under club control and is eligible for salary arbitration. He went 4-10 with a 4.17 earned average in 21 starts and one relief appearance, missing early season time due to a left oblique strain.
Four other Mariners became free agents on Thursday: outfielders Randy Arozarena and Taylor Ward, shortstop J.P. Crawford, and left-hander Hoby Milner.
Seattle holds a $10 million option for Munoz for the 2028 season. That amount increases by $250,000 for each of 20, 30, 40, and 45 games finished.
