Irene Miller, 50, was handcuffed by Osceola County deputies as she exited her flight from Las Vegas on Friday morning. The arrest followed a report that her four children were left without overnight supervision in their Kissimmee home while she traveled for work.
Body camera footage released by the sheriff's office shows officers approaching Miller in the airport terminal. She was escorted to the booking area and placed into custody. The incident occurred two days after one of the children called 911 to report that a dumbbell had fallen on the head of her 9-year-old brother.
Deputies arrived at the residence shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 and found children aged 9, 11, 12, and 14 with no adults present. Fire rescue personnel transported the injured boy to Celebration Hospital, where he was treated and discharged. A deputy later reached Miller by phone; she stated she was working in Las Vegas and intended to return on Oct. 23. Records show she had departed Florida on Oct. 18.
Miller told investigators she had arranged for a babysitter to travel from Tampa to assist the children with morning routines and check on them during the day. The sheriff's office noted the sitter was not required to stay overnight. Authorities contacted the children's father, who agreed to take the four children to his home while detectives prepared to meet Miller upon her arrival.
Miller was charged with four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and booked into the Orange County Jail. Sheriff Chris Blackmon said the department would not tolerate child neglect. "These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children," Blackmon said.
