Residents and visitors in Central Indiana can expect heavy foot traffic and strict dress codes in the Historic Irvington neighborhood this Saturday as the area hosts its annual Halloween street fair. The event, which marks the conclusion of a weeklong festival, runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Irvington, though organizers note that many attendees arrive earlier to browse the offerings.
The festival began last Saturday with a masquerade ball. Since then, the neighborhood has hosted a series of themed events leading up to the current weekend. This year’s program includes a sold-out Vampire Run scheduled for Saturday morning, which takes place before the street fair officially opens. The run draws enough participants that organizers have already filled all available spots.
Festival organizer Carrie Yazell told WISH-TV that the street fair represents a unique cultural moment in Indianapolis. “Street fair day is insane in Indianapolis,” she said. “The neighborhood really gets into it. The guests really get into it. I mean, the dogs get into it.” The event features multiple stages with live entertainment throughout the day. A new booze garden has been added to the traditional beer garden, giving attendees more beverage options while they walk the streets.
More than 225 vendors will line the streets selling handmade goods, food, and drinks. Participation in costume contests for both humans and pets is a central part of the day’s activities. Festival organizer Caitlin Luebcke emphasized that dressing up is expected of attendees. “You would be the outcast if you didn’t,” she said when asked about the necessity of wearing a costume. Dogs are welcome to join the fun, though Luebcke advised other pet owners to keep their animals at home. “Please just bring your dogs,” she said.
The week’s schedule continues with two additional events before the weekend ends. Tonight at 6 p.m., Irving Circle Park hosts “Spooky Stories/A Night Out in Sleepy Hollow.” Story readings from contest winners, ranging from elementary students to adults, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Yazell described the evening as a special tradition for the neighborhood. “That’s a really special night in our neighborhood that we love,” she said.
Friday features the Zombie Bike Ride, a four-mile cycling event organized by Bike Indy. IMPD officers on bicycles will lead riders dressed as zombies through the neighborhood in waves. Residents are encouraged to cheer from their yards as the costumed cyclists pass by.
Irvington’s reputation as a Halloween destination is further supported by the neighborhood’s house decorating contest. Organizers expanded the contest categories this year due to high participation. Winners are listed on the festival website, and visitors can tour the area to see elaborate displays. Yazell noted that some homeowners spend months preparing their properties. “Some of these houses have months of preparation, and they are top notch,” she said. “Some of them are like whole scenes and scenarios.”
