Peoria, Illinois, 1991: Metallica opened its Wherever We May Roam tour there on October 29. The run reached 224 shows and ended in December 1992.

October 29, 1971, is also the date Duane Allman died. The Allman Brothers Band guitarist was 24 when his motorcycle swerved to dodge a semi trailer. The bike went airborne, pinned him, then skidded 90 more feet.

Records issued on this date include Creedence Clearwater Revival's Willy and the Poor Boys (1969), John Lennon's Mind Games (1973), Supertramp's Famous Last Words (1982), and Wilco's Being There (1996). Frank Zappa's mockumentary musical 200 Motels reached theaters in 1971.

The day carries other music milestones. Axl Rose said on October 29, 1996, that Slash was out of Guns N' Roses; Slash later formed Slash's Snakepit and Velvet Revolver. Jello Biafra was sued by Dead Kennedys bandmates in 1998 over unpaid royalties, and the group prevailed, taking control of its songs and name. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th anniversary concert played Madison Square Garden in 2009 with Mick Jagger, Bono, and Bruce Springsteen.

Birthdays on October 29 include Denny Laine of the Moody Blues and Wings, James Williamson of The Stooges, Kevin Dubrow of Quiet Riot, Roger O'Donnell of The Cure, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, and Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend.
