Democrats secured majorities in both chambers of Congress during the recent midterm elections. This shift grants them full investigatory powers, including the ability to subpoena records and compel testimony. The party has already outlined a seven-point agenda for oversight work that will begin immediately upon their return to power.

The first priority involves the Jeffrey Epstein case. Lawmakers intend to probe the administration's handling of documents related to the late convicted sex offender. Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland stated that evidence involving 11 women tells a far more damning story about the relationship between Epstein and Donald Trump. Raskin noted that Trump claimed he knew Epstein just like everybody in Palm Beach knew him, but the records suggest otherwise.

Public corruption is the second major target. Democrats plan to investigate how administration officials advanced the financial interests of the president and his family. This includes scrutiny of Truth Social, cryptocurrency projects, and overseas ventures involving the president's sons. Rep. Robert Garcia of California, who is expected to chair the House Oversight committee, said lawmakers must ensure that dark money does not flow through the political system to the detriment of the public.

Immigration enforcement will face hearings on alleged abuse and misconduct by federal agents. Democrats cite the killing of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota this year as a catalyst for renewed oversight. Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington described Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a lawless agency causing generational trauma. She said House Democrats are doing the oversight work that Republicans refused to do during the previous two years.

Public health infrastructure is also on the list. Democrats released a report in June detailing how the administration undermined scientific research. The new committee will focus its attention on Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his role in these changes to federal health agencies.

Executive power will be scrutinized through the appropriations process. Democrats will examine the president's projects, including the remodeling of the White House East Wing and the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Committee staffers note that the White House has rescinded billions of dollars in congressionally approved spending without proper authorization.

The final two areas involve the war with Iran and Elon Musk. Democrats will press Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on the cost of the conflict and whether the president sought proper authorization for military force. An impeachment vote on Hegseth could occur during the lame-duck session. Additionally, a group of Silicon Valley House Democrats wrote to the White House in October, demanding scrutiny of federal funding awarded to Musk's businesses to ensure adequate safeguards exist against political interference.
