Polling stations across Indiana opened Tuesday for the final day of voting in the midterm elections. Residents must cast ballots by 6 p.m. to participate in the contests for secretary of state, U.S. Congress, and the statehouse. Local races for prosecutor and sheriff are also on the ballot, along with several referendums.

Early voting activity exceeded totals from the 2022 midterms in multiple counties. Marion County recorded the highest number of early ballots with 86,597 votes. Hamilton County followed with 70,190 early votes. Hendricks County reported 28,862 early ballots, while Tippecanoe County had 24,861.

Monroe County counted 18,342 early votes. Boone County had 16,431, and Henry County recorded 6,650 early ballots. Shelby County reported 4,512 early voters according to local television data. Voters still need to present a valid photo ID to cast their ballot.

Conditions at polling places varied across central Indiana. In Johnson County, all locations opened without issue. A steady line of voters formed at the White River branch of the Johnson County Public Library. Hamilton County also saw a busy morning with a steady line at the Ritz Charles.

Downtown Indianapolis experienced a quieter start compared to the early voting period. The City-County Building had shorter lines Tuesday morning. This contrasted with the longer lines observed there during the early voting phase. Voters in line by 6 p.m. are eligible to vote.
