A Midland, Texas, jury has handed down a final punishment for the death of a five-week-old infant. The sentence comes four years after the child died in the hospital.

The court sentenced 24-year-old Sarah Michelle Gilley-Wroe to life in prison without the possibility of parole. A jury found her guilty of one count of capital murder of a child under 10 years old. The verdict was based on evidence gathered by local detectives and medical experts.

The baby died on May 11, 2022, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Medical records cited severe head trauma as the cause of death. Tests revealed two fractures in the back of the skull. Doctors noted the injuries matched patterns seen in blunt force trauma cases.

Investigators analyzed Gilley-Wroe’s phone and found Google searches that supported the case. Authorities also pointed to statements she made while in custody. She told a cellmate she threw the baby against a wall and struck the child until the crying stopped. Prosecutors noted she was the only person alone with the infant during the time of death.

Medical experts compared the force needed to cause the skull fractures to a fall from a two-story building. Gilley-Wroe argued that her aunt, the baby’s father, or her dog could have caused the injuries. The jury rejected those alternatives and returned a guilty verdict.
