Water stood approximately two feet above Brittany Grant's knees inside her Palm Bay home on Monday, forcing her and her son, Nikoa Pastorius, to climb onto a kitchen counter with their three dogs. The family remained stranded there after floodwater surged through the house near California Avenue, blocking their only exit routes. Grant described the water flowing outside the structure like a river, leaving the interior completely covered and the family with no path to safety.

Grant called 911 three times but received information that no emergency resources were available. She then recorded a video of the situation and posted it to social media to appeal for assistance. The plea reached people in the neighborhood who did not know the family personally. A neighbor stated that their mother saw the Facebook post, which prompted the community to mobilize quickly.

A group of young people arrived first using a paddleboard. They were followed by another individual in a kayak. A couple with a raised truck also messaged Grant to confirm they were en route. That pair waited at the end of the driveway while the paddleboarders reached the house to facilitate the escape. Grant thanked the rescuers on camera, noting that the community came together to save them.

Nikoa Pastorius said the experience intensified his anxiety. He described feeling stressed while waiting inside the flooded home but expressed relief that he had escaped. The family is now staying with a friend. Grant said she has lived in the neighborhood for eight years and had never witnessed flooding of this magnitude prior to Monday.

The rescue occurred while flooding across Brevard County forced evacuations and closed roads in several neighborhoods. The governor declared a state of emergency for the region. Brevard Public Schools announced closures for Tuesday, Nov. 3, and officials stated that flooding was forcing some polling locations to move for Election Day. Florida Power & Light utility crews were positioned nearby, but water continued to cover some streets. Officials warned that dangerous conditions remained heading into Tuesday.

Restoration efforts in the areas hit hardest by the flooding could take days. Grant expressed gratitude that strangers recognized her distress and provided the means to leave the house when official channels could not.
