Yuji Nishida serves the ball at speeds exceeding 120 kilometers per hour. The Japanese outside hitter plays for the JTEKT Stings, a club based in Kariya, Aichi. Nishida is widely regarded as one of the best outside hitters in the world.

Nishida was born on January 10, 2000, in Inabe City, Mie Prefecture. He began playing volleyball at age 5 with the Daian Junior club. Both of his siblings played the sport in his family.

After graduating from Kaisei High School, Nishida skipped university to enter the professional league directly. He debuted for the Japan national team in 2018. At that time, he was 18 years old.

Nishida made his name at the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup held in Japan. He was 19 during the tournament. Japan finished fourth, a result described as their best in decades. Nishida received the award for Best Outside Hitter of the tournament. In a match against Canada, he recorded five aces in a single game.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics marked the next major chapter for Nishida. He played despite a minor injury sustained before the tournament. Japan advanced to the quarterfinals, a first for the team in 29 years. Nishida and teammate Yuki Ishikawa led the team during the event.

Nishida stands 1.86 meters tall, a height considered modest for an outside hitter. He compensates with a vertical jump reach of 1.50 meters. This allows him to attack over blocks exceeding 2 meters in height. He hits with his left hand, a trait that distinguishes his play style.

In late 2022, Nishida married Sarina Koga, who captained the Japanese women's national volleyball team. The couple is often cited as a leading partnership in Japanese sports. Nishida also serves as a face for major brands, including Asics and Red Bull.

Nishida has managed injuries to his ankle and back during his career. He adjusted his jump technique and diet to reduce stress on his joints. He has returned to competitive form in recent FIVB Nations League events.

Nishida remains with the JTEKT Stings in the Japanese V.League. He continues to play for the Japanese national team. His next goals include winning medals at the Olympic Games and the World Championship.
