Joe Mitchell is running for the U.S. House seat in Iowa's second congressional district. The 29-year-old Republican holds President Trump's endorsement. He is one of a small group of Gen Z candidates seeking congressional seats in the 2026 election.

Iowa's second district is considered a tossup race. Voters in the area have expressed dissatisfaction with the current president. Democrats are currently closing in on potential control of the House.

Mitchell is a former state senator and real estate developer. His campaign centers on what he calls an anti-corruption platform. He proposes a maximum of six terms for House members. He also supports a ban on congressional stock trading. Mitchell has rejected campaign donations from corporate PACs.

The candidate stated that voters across party lines are seeking hope. He said he hears this sentiment everywhere his campaign travels. Mitchell believes his platform addresses the economic concerns and institutional distrust common among Americans under the age of 30.

Currently, only one Gen Z member serves in the House. That representative is Maxwell Frost, a 29-year-old Democrat from Florida. Two other Gen Z candidates are expected to win their races on Tuesday. Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old Democrat, is favored to win in Colorado's first district. Michael Alfonso, a 26-year-old Republican, is expected to carry Wisconsin's seventh district.

Alfonso is a political newcomer who is married to the daughter of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Duffy held the Wisconsin seat from 2011 to 2019. If elected, Alfonso would be the first person born in the 2000s to serve in Congress. He previously described his age as his greatest advantage in an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio.

Young Republicans remain a rare group in congressional politics. According to data from the nonpartisan organization Future Caucus, only 4% of congressional candidates in this cycle are Gen Z. That makes it the least likely generation to win a primary. A majority of Gen Z candidates ran as Democrats. Under a third filed as Republicans.

Adam Pennings is the executive director of Run Gen Z. This organization helps young conservatives running for office. Mitchell initially founded and ran the group. Pennings said the organization aims to build a bench of young leaders ready to serve as long-term incumbents retire. Run Gen Z announced endorsements for more than 220 Gen Z and millennial conservatives in late October.

Riley Owen is a 28-year-old Republican running in Utah's newly redrawn first congressional district. The district heavily favors Democrats. Owen acknowledged the political realities of his race but remained optimistic about a grassroots campaign. He stated that people are hungry for new faces and fresh ideas.

Mitchell describes the future of the Republican Party as an America First party. He said this approach asks how policies help the American people. He believes Vice President JD Vance and other members of the Trump cabinet share this view. The term has become a point of contention within the conservative movement, especially regarding the U.S. war with Iran. Mitchell has not come out against the war. He said Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, but he does not support endless wars.
