Indianapolis residents sorted fifty common Halloween candies into a single ranking this week. The list was compiled after the October 29 publication of the results in the Central Indiana Herald. Readers and local critics weighed in on which treats deserve a spot in the good pile and which belong in the bottom of the bag.
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups took the number one spot. The combination of chocolate and peanut butter was cited as the primary reason for its top placement. Snickers held the second position. The bar contains peanuts, caramel, nougat, and chocolate. Starburst finished third, with pink and red flavors leading the pack.
The middle of the list included familiar brands like Skittles and Twix. Skittles ranked fifth. Twix placed seventh, credited for its cookie crunch and caramel filling. Smarties, described as cheap and chalky, took fourth place. Nerds Gummy Clusters earned a top ten spot at number six. The list acknowledged that nostalgia and texture often influence these rankings as much as taste.
Lower ranked items included Tootsie Pops and Kit Kats. Tootsie Pops ranked 12th. Kit Kats came in at 13th. The list noted that Kit Kats are shareable, though few people are generous enough to part with them. Butterfinger took 15th place. Its flaky texture was described as worth the effort to clean from teeth.
The bottom of the list featured candies that often go uneaten. Candy Corn ranked 46th. Bit-O-Honey placed 47th. Necco Wafers finished at 48th. Circus Peanuts took 49th place. The color orange and banana flavor were noted, along with a mysterious texture. Peanut Butter Kisses finished last at number 50.
Peanut Butter Kisses were described as orange-and-black wrapped taffy. The list stated that the candy appears every year but is rarely eaten. The ranking ended with the note that it was dead last with no debate. Other low-ranked items included Mike and Ike at 41st and Good & Plenty at 43rd. The final list provided a clear order for the fifty treats evaluated.
