A Greek taverna in South Norwalk will hold its formal opening ceremony on Nov. 5.
George Valouktzis, a co-owner of Ilios Greek Taverna & Bar, said the establishment has been operating since late spring but is waiting for a specific date to announce its arrival to the wider public. The grand opening is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and involves the city’s Economic and Community Development agency. Valouktzis stated the goal is to ensure local patrons are aware of the new dining option.
The family-run business aims to distinguish itself through specific geographic and culinary roots. Valouktzis and his sister were born in the United States, but their relatives migrated from the village of Naoussa in northern Greece in 1971. The owners bring recipes directly from that region. Valouktzis noted the restaurant prefers the label "Greek" over "Mediterranean," which he said can encompass a wider range of cultures. He asserted that the menu reflects their specific heritage rather than a regional blend.
The menu features standard Greek dishes such as moussaka, pastitsio, and branzino fillets. The wine list currently includes several varieties from Greece, with a plan to eventually stock only Greek wines. Valouktzis described the wines as organic and popular, with most sourced from locations approximately 10 minutes from his family’s village.
Diners have shown interest in the small plates and appetizers. Valouktzis said many customers order multiple items from the board. One item is Cheese Saganaki, which involves pan-seared kefalograviera cheese flambéed with Metaxa brandy and drizzled with fig compote. Other popular items include Greek Bifteki, described as flame-grilled beef patties with fresh herbs and tzatziki, and Loukaniko, a sausage seasoned with citrus peel and herbs. Vegetarian options include Melitzanosalata, a mixture of roasted eggplant and tomato, and Skordalia, a potato and garlic purée.
Alex Cross, the assistant director of business development and tourism for Norwalk, expressed enthusiasm for the restaurant's debut. He recently dined at the taverna and shared the Ilios Signature Board with his date. Cross said he is still thinking about the bifteki and lamb chops. He added that the restaurant has already established a reputation for quality beverages and food in the South Norwalk area.
