The rivalry between South Dakota State and the University of South Dakota dates back to 1889, the same year South Dakota became a state. Saturday marks the 119th edition of that contest, a matchup that will take place at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings.

The game is nationally televised and expected to draw a crowd of just under 20,000 fans. The Jackrabbits lead the all-time series 58 to 53, with seven ties. The first meeting, which occurred on May 5 in Sioux Falls, ended in a 6-6 draw before statehood was officially recognized in November.

Forum Communications is producing a live pre-game broadcast from the stadium. The one-hour program begins at 10 a.m. central time on Saturday. It will air on KSFL-TV and KNBN-TV, as well as on the websites for Sioux Falls Live, Mitchell Republic, Madison Daily Leader, and Pierre Capital Journal.

Viewers in the Sioux Falls metro area can watch on over-the-air channel 36 or Midco cable channel 616. In Rapid City, the show runs on the 21.3 subchannel of KNBN and the NewsCenter1 website. Other viewers may need to check their local providers or stream the content through the Midwest Sports+ app.

The broadcast is produced by the Midwest Sports+ team, which has covered live high school football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball for the past two seasons. The on-site staff includes veteran sportswriter Matt Zimmer, along with reporters Marcus Traxler and Trey Houchin. Broadcasters John Gaskins, Zach Borg, and Brian Mueller also participate in the coverage.

The media organization began operations on August 1, 2022. It now operates across multiple platforms, including print and digital news sites in Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Madison, and Pierre. Recent local coverage included the funeral of Minnehaha County Sheriff’s deputy Katherine Frank, reported by crime and courts reporter Hunter Dunteman and Republic reporter Jennifer Leither.

The Saturday broadcast serves as a centerpiece for the week’s coverage of the State-U game. The team combines writing, photography, and video to deliver stories to readers and viewers across the region.
