Morgan Freeman was 50 when his performance in Street Smart earned his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Samuel L. Jackson was 45 when he played Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction. Denzel Washington was 25 when he was cast in his first major film, the comedy-drama Carbon Copy. Freeman had worked for years in theater and appeared on The Electric Company before Street Smart brought him wide film recognition in 1987. That role led to later parts in Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption, and Million Dollar Baby. Jackson spent years in theater and in supporting parts before Pulp Fiction. He later worked in Jackie Brown and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Washington gained attention through theater and television, including the 1982 medical drama St. Elsewhere. Carbon Copy was released in 1981, when he was 26.

Jennifer Hudson placed seventh on the third season of American Idol in 2004. Two years later, she played Effie White in Dreamgirls and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at age 25. Her awards continued with a Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2009 for her self-titled album, a Daytime Emmy as an executive producer of the 2020 film Baba Yaga, and a Tony as co-producer of A Strange Loop, which won Best Musical in 2022. She is the second Black woman and the youngest Black woman to hold EGOT status. Lupita Nyong'o won Best Supporting Actress at age 30 for Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, her first feature film after graduating from the Yale School of Drama. She later appeared in Black Panther, Us, and The Wild Robot.

Regina Hall earned a master's degree in journalism before acting. Her film breakthrough came in 2000 as Brenda Meeks in Scary Movie, when she was 29. Will Smith was 25 in 1993's Six Degrees of Separation, after The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air; he went on to star in Independence Day and Men in Black. Jamie Foxx joined the cast of In Living Color in 1991, at 25, after stand-up work, and later acted in Ray and Collateral.

Idris Elba worked in British television before he debuted as Stringer Bell on HBO's The Wire in 2002, at age 30. The role led to Luther, Thor, and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Zendaya was 25 when Spider-Man: No Way Home and Dune were released and she played Rue Bennett on HBO's Euphoria. In 2022, she won her second Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, becoming the youngest two-time acting winner in Emmy history. She was also the youngest woman nominated for producing, as an executive producer on Euphoria, and received two nominations for writing original music for the show.
