Indiana University expects to welcome thousands of visitors to Bloomington this Saturday for homecoming. The event coincides with a sold-out football game and live coverage by ESPN’s “College GameDay,” creating a surge in local activity that requires coordinated safety measures.

The IU Police Department is working alongside the Bloomington Police Department and the Indiana State Police. Benjamin Hunter, associate vice president and superintendent for IU Public Safety, stated that the teams are assisting people throughout the weekend. He said the goal is for visitors to have a great time in Bloomington.

Hunter explained that the departments are using a game day operations center and an emergency operations center. Drones will monitor traffic and crowds from the air. Officers will patrol in both plainclothes and uniform to maintain visibility and order across the campus and surrounding streets.

Students on campus expressed excitement about the upcoming events. Jiya Surwanshi said she and her classmates have looked forward to the weekend all semester. Her friend Aashni Deglurkar noted that law enforcement does a good job organizing people, even when traffic builds up. Surwanshi added that while travel times are longer, she feels safe during big games.

With large crowds expected, police are asking fans to plan ahead and bring patience. Hunter advised visitors to arrive early and get in line. He suggested securing a tailgating spot or a preferred parking location in advance so fans can enjoy the festivities without delay.

ESPN’s “College GameDay” broadcast will begin at 9 a.m. at Showalter Fountain. The Hoosiers will face Minnesota at 3:30 p.m. at Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium. Residents and visitors can receive emergency alerts by texting “SafeIU” to 77295 through Sunday.
