The Platt Panthers defeated the South Windsor Bobcats 49-13 on Friday night in Meriden, Connecticut, to maintain their position within the top eight teams of the CIAC Class MM standings. The victory improved Platt's record to 5-2, a result that keeps the team in contention for a postseason berth.
Senior quarterback Austen Standish led the offensive attack with four touchdown passes and one rushing score. He completed 11 of 18 passes for 199 yards and added 50 yards on nine carries. His performance was instrumental in breaking the game open during the first half, as the Panthers scored on all four of their initial possessions.
The Panthers built a commanding 35-7 lead by halftime, capping a dominant first half with a 46-yard interception return by sophomore Amari Bowman. The score, reached with 1:05 remaining in the second quarter, followed a 21-point scoring spree in the final five minutes of that period. South Windsor, now 2-5, managed only one other touchdown on the night.
Coach Jason Bruenn emphasized the high stakes of the Class MM race, noting that two other teams in the division already have two losses. Bruenn stated that the team must take its fate into its own hands to qualify. He told his players that with two losses already on the ledger, they could not afford to drop another game if they wanted to reach the playoffs.
Standish credited the team's aggressive mindset for the win. He noted that the goal was to dominate the opponent from the start, a strategy that contrasted with a closer 21-20 victory against East Hartford the previous week. Standish said the team intended to play strong both early and late, a plan that resulted in a decisive margin of victory.
Wide receiver Maurice Christie was the primary target for Standish, catching six passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns. The junior's receptions included gains of 12, 40, and 42 yards. The third of these scores, early in the second half, triggered the CIAC mandated running clock for the remainder of the contest.
South Windsor's only other score came with just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Jalil Montgomery ran four yards for a touchdown, capping a night in which the senior rushed for 37 yards. The final score of 49-13 confirmed Platt's standing among the elite teams in the class heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
