Sen. Jon Ossoff won reelection to the U.S. Senate in Georgia on Tuesday. The Associated Press called the race for the Democrat, who defeated Republican Rep. Mike Collins. Ossoff is the only incumbent Senate Democrat who held a seat in a state that President Donald Trump carried in the 2024 presidential election. His victory provides a key win for Democrats in a traditionally competitive Southern state.
The race drew significant attention a year ago when both parties viewed it as a major contest of the midterm cycle. Republicans nominated Collins, a first-time Senate candidate and owner of a family trucking company. In the spring primary, President Trump endorsed Collins over former football coach Derek Dooley. Dooley had received the backing of Gov. Brian Kemp, a popular Republican figure in Georgia. Collins faced scrutiny during the general election campaign regarding his ties to family members and former staffers who hold white nationalist and antisemitic views. He also maintained Trump's claims about widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
Ossoff, a former congressional aide and documentary filmmaker, built his political career on strong constituent services. He first gained national attention in 2017 during a close special election for a suburban House seat. After winning a runoff in 2021 to take a Senate seat, he became known for his tough questioning of Trump appointees during confirmation hearings. During this campaign, videos of Ossoff criticizing alleged corruption in the Trump administration circulated widely online. Many Democrats began discussing him as a potential presidential candidate for 2028, although Ossoff has stated he is not running for the White House.
Georgia political history makes this result noteworthy. In 2021, Democrats flipped both of the state’s Senate seats for the first time in a generation. In the 2022 midterms, Sen. Raphael Warnock barely retained his seat in a runoff against a flawed opponent. However, Republicans have won nearly every other statewide office in Georgia. Ossoff’s win extends Democratic presence in the state’s Senate delegation despite the national political environment.
The Associated Press called the race based on final vote counts from across the state. The result confirms Ossoff’s hold on the seat he first won in a 2021 runoff. The victory marks the end of the Georgia Senate contest, which featured two candidates with distinct national profiles. Collins had struggled to distance himself from controversial associates and election fraud claims. Ossoff benefited from a reputation for methodical oversight and strong local support that extended to some Republican officials.
