Aaron Nesmith sank a three-pointer from the right corner with 28.2 seconds remaining on Wednesday night to give the Indiana Pacers a 107-103 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. The bucket closed out a five-game losing streak for Indiana, which had fallen short in its previous five contests.
Memphis had pulled within one point at 104-103 when Ty Jerome converted a floater late in the fourth quarter. Nesmith answered with the long-range shot to secure the result. Andrew Nembhard led the Pacers with 22 points, while Pascal Siakam contributed 20 and Quenton Jackson added 13. Nesmith finished with 16 points.
Indiana managed a comeback from a 91-86 deficit with 6:19 left in the game. The Pacers scored eight consecutive points, a run capped by two breakaway dunks from Obi Toppin. The team had struggled recently due to injuries, including to star guard Tyrese Haliburton. In Monday's loss to Atlanta, the Pacers utilized a six-man rotation. Against Memphis, starters Siakam, Nembhard, and Nesmith returned to the lineup.
The Grizzlies dropped their second consecutive game after beginning the season with six straight wins. Ty Jerome and Cedric Coward each scored 23 points for Memphis. Zach Edey recorded 11 points and 13 rebounds. Memphis entered the game as the league's last undefeated team before an overtime loss to New Orleans on Monday.
Indiana's defense limited Memphis early, forcing eight turnovers in the first quarter and 12 in the first half. Those mistakes resulted in 16 points for the Pacers. Indiana led 54-52 at halftime, and the teams traded leads through the midway point of the fourth quarter before the Pacers pulled away. Neither team held a lead of double digits at any point.
The Pacers host the Denver Nuggets on Saturday. The Grizzlies play the Oklahoma City City Thunder on Friday night.
