Nearly 200 schoolchildren were killed when the U.S. military struck an elementary school in Iran, a figure that anchors the new congressional oversight agenda. Rep. Robert Garcia of California, who will chair the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, issued a blunt warning to the Trump administration on Tuesday. His message consisted of two words: lawyer up.

Garcia released the statement after Democrats secured a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. The party has now flipped both chambers of Congress. Garcia said he intends to take on what he called the Trump Crime Family, corporate corruption, Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement abuses, and the cover-up of the Epstein files.

The incoming chair faces a mandate that includes both policy shifts and accountability. A Strength In Numbers/Verasight poll from earlier this month found that a strong majority of voters wanted the new Congress to undo the administration's agenda on tariffs, trade, healthcare, and immigration. Voters also expressed a desire for Congress to serve as a check on presidential power.

While some party leaders focus on economic fixes, Garcia signals a push for legal scrutiny. He is expected to examine how the Justice Department used its power against elected officials, former officials, and civilians. The scope of his review includes the administration's use of its position to enrich itself and settle lawsuits against the executive branch.

Other Democratic leaders are managing expectations on the pace of investigations. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters on Wednesday that no member of the House Democratic caucus has spoken to him about impeachment. He said the caucus has been relentlessly focused on affordability and accountability.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Wednesday that Democrats will use subpoenas and hearings to hold the administration accountable. However, he stated that the top priority remains driving down costs. Schumer added that Democrats will work to lower expenses with the president or without him.

The shift in power follows a midterm election where Democrats won control of the House. Speaker Mike Johnson announced he is stepping down following the loss. Garcia's committee will now begin organizing its first set of hearings and document requests under the new majority.

The oversight committee has jurisdiction over the executive branch, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department. Garcia's statement marked the first formal comment from a future committee chair regarding the administration's conduct since the election results were certified.
