Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faces an imminent vote in the House of Representatives to impeach him, a move accelerated by the Republican Party's heavy losses in the 2026 midterm elections. Lawmakers plan to hold the vote as soon as next week, following Congress's return from recess. The push aims to assign responsibility for the war with Iran to the Pentagon's top leader rather than the White House.

The timeline of the conflict and its political fallout is clear. President Donald Trump decided to launch military action against Iran, a decision that eroded voter support for the GOP. Hegseth, who advocated for the war, oversold the likelihood of a quick and easy victory. Despite limited signs that continued bombing brought Iran closer to surrender, Hegseth continued to argue for escalation. This strategy led to a protracted conflict that worsened the affordability crisis and triggered a voter revolt against the party.

Republican strategists acknowledged that the party's problems extended beyond the war, citing losses comparable to the 2008 cycle. However, party leaders were unwilling to blame President Trump directly. Instead, they turned to Hegseth, who has made few friends on Capitol Hill since taking command of the Pentagon. Vice President JD Vance stated on Wednesday that the war was the reason for the election loss, though he did not assign specific blame to any individual.

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky plans to trigger the impeachment vote. Multiple GOP sources expect the measure to pass, as even surviving House Republicans see Hegseth as a viable target for repudiation. A former senior Pentagon official said the pivot is starting, noting that the conflict was primarily a Department of War-led effort to resolve a foreign policy matter through military action.

President Trump has not yet signaled plans to fire Hegseth. He told aides recently that Hegseth is his best guy and that the defense secretary should fight back against impeachment efforts. Trump defended the war effort on Wednesday, saying he would do it again if given the chance. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis stated that Democrats are working against the American people if they pursue investigations she described as sham efforts.

Hegseth has prepared to defend his record. In a statement, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Hegseth will not back down from politicians seeking partisan points. Parnell noted that Hegseth is committed to leading the department until the end of Trump's term. Hegseth has communicated to the White House that he is prepared to own every policy decision and action taken by the Pentagon, expecting to defend those moves in public hearings.

Some Republicans believe Hegseth will eventually become the fall guy for the midterm losses. One Republican close to the White House said Hegseth has been dishonest or incorrect about timelines and goals since the beginning of the conflict. Massie noted that the election result was avoidable if the party had broken from its following of Trump. Hegseth has discussed potential future ambitions, including running for office in Tennessee, but those closest to Trump do not believe that is an immediate goal.
