Senator Ted Cruz attributed the Republican midterm defeat to a failure to address rising consumer costs.
The 2026 midterm elections resulted in Democratic control of both the House and the Senate. Democrats also secured victories in statewide races across Texas. Cruz stated that the consequences of this shift are most visible in his home state. He argued that the party did not sufficiently recognize how inflation impacted voters. Specific factors included higher gas, grocery, and insurance prices.
Cruz also criticized the duration of the Iran conflict. He noted the war should have been short and decisive. He said he called James Talarico to congratulate him on his election. Cruz said he looks forward to collaborating with the new state leadership. However, he promised to oppose policies such as border opening and tax increases.
The senator plans to focus on rebuilding support among voters who changed their allegiance. He pointed to two recent legislative achievements that he believes voters overlooked. These include Trump accounts and the Education Freedom Tax Credit. Cruz described these measures as generationally powerful. He expressed confidence in the party's future, stating that Texas will be red again.
